I am originally from the Midwest (Chicago & Munster, IN), now living in southern California. I studied Jewelry Design and Silversmithing at Indiana University with Alma Eikermann. I also studied at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with William T. King. I have a degree in Graphic Design and own a Signs Now franchise .....that allows me the freedom to do what I really want to do....make jewelry.
Each of my pieces is the culmination of years of perfecting design and technique, and stacks of drawings scribbled on napkins (like Frank Gheary). My jewelry is inspired by stones gathered from my travels to Greece,Turkey, Morocco, Mexico, Chile, Europe, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina and 3 tiny little black volcanic rocks that stuck in my boot in Antarctica - I didn't pick them up, they picked me. I am also influenced by Asian design elements and superb buildings like the Guggeheim in Bilbao, Spain and the Disney Center in LA. Many times the gemstone or beach stone has dictated what the piece will ultimately look like.
Each piece is hand fabricated from sterling silver with a lot of patience and passion. I love the contrast in texture and highly polished surfaces. The textural elements of reticulated and fused silver, as well as mokume gane, are incorporated in my work. I love the problem solving aspect of turning an idea into reality, and playing with the tools. The time spent in my studio is pure delight and more fun than anyone should be allowed to have.
I hope that you will feel the same joy in wearing my art that I have had in making it. Karen
